On April 20, Swissnex brought the SARNETZ virtual board game to China for the first time in a workshop attended by students and professors from Tongji University and Shanghai University of Electric Power. This Swiss-initiated project engaged the Chinese students to learn, debate and collaborate on the topics of sustainable development, climate change and energy transition in an interactive real case simulation.

China has the manufacturing capability and an ultra-large-scale domestic market that offers Swiss deeptech startups a very particular set of opportunities. The sheer size of its population and the propensity toward new technologies would make any innovative companies excited just to think about how many changes they could bring about if they made it into China.
With the theme of “Reconnecting Science and Society”, the 5th Global Science Film Festival (GSFF) will meet the audience on 31 March in Switzerland. As a special global partner, the Swissnex network will introduce the selected films to international audiences in China, India, and Japan for the first time.

The protection of intellectual property (IP) is regularly mentioned as one of the main concerns for Swiss startups looking to enter the Chinese market. In the following discussion between Ms. Simin Yang from Swissnex in China and Ms. Haifeng Wang, IP protection specialist at a local IP law firm, Ms. Wang emphasizes that IP protection is something Swiss startups need to think about when expanding their business into China, but it does not need to be an impediment that prevents market expansion. On Oct 29, Swissnex in China curated a Swiss Pavilion at China Education Expo (CEE) in Shanghai to showcase the variety and the quality of the curricula as well as the excellence of Swiss higher education and research. The onsite education expo was complemented by a virtual Einstein Day on November 14, which brought high-level representatives from leading Swiss public universities to share first-hand information about study programs and university choices with top Chinese talents.
With technological and social improvements, the boundary of design is blurring; thus, the role of design needs to be re-defined. Nowadays, designs are more of human relations, environment, and social- and cultural developments rather than objects, information, systems, and services. In the 35th Café des Sciences Lecture, we were glad to have speakers from ZHdK and Jiangnan University share their perspectives on the role of social design.
