With the enthusiastic reception of the Cosmos Archaeology Exhibition, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our Cosmic Dialogues series. These dialogues will feature the talented artists of the Cosmos Archaeology Exhibition and the scientists of space science, who will unveil the mysteries behind their captivating art-science creations. For the inaugural Cosmic Dialogue, we will invite the Co-Curator of Cosmos Archaeology Exhibition – Iris Long as the moderator, joined by the artist duos Semiconductor and Quadrature, who delve into the complex interplay between science, technology, and art in this dynamic panel discussion.
Semiconductor, consisting of UK artists Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt, is renowned for their thorough research and transformative use of scientific data to create impressive sculptures, moving images, and drawings. Their work challenges us to broaden our perceptions of reality and to question our role as observers of the natural world. Quadrature is composed of Juliane Götz, Sebastian Neitsch, and formerly Jan Bernstein (until 2016). Their art notably embodies intricate and transdisciplinary methods, interwoven with narratives that explore our universe, seamlessly blending elemental emotions with advanced scientific theories.
During this Cosmic Dialogue, we will have the privilege of gaining deep insights into the creative processes of these remarkable artists, the advanced technological tools they employ, and the thematic connections within their groundbreaking artworks. Moreover, we will explore how both artist duos utilize technology as a medium to bridge the gap between the tangible and intangible, converting scientific data into poetic and engaging art pieces. We will probe into their approaches to processing and interacting with scientific data, as well as the stories behind their collaborations with scientists. This discussion will reveal how art can expand our perceptions and engage us in profound scientific and philosophical inquiries.
We look forward to your participation in exploring how these artists integrate science and technology into their creative endeavors, while constantly pushing the boundaries of what art can achieve in the cosmos.
Cosmic Dialogues
Cosmic Dialogues, are a one-hour online or in-person session with the artists of Cosmos Archaeology Exhibition or the scientists of relevant topics to share their artworks, research projects and insights. As Swissnex in China is the official LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) host in China, the Cosmic Dialogues are part of the LASER Talks and aim to deepen our engagement with the international art-science community, facilitating exchanges and inspiring new perspectives.

Semiconductor
Artist DuoFor over 25 years, UK artist duo Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt, aka Semiconductor, have explored the human experience at the intersection between science and technology. Their innovative works confront us with the seemingly unknowable ephemerality of the natural world around us, contextualising scientific data into captivating sculpture, moving image and drawings that encourage us to expand our perceptions of reality and question our role as observers.
Known for their meticulous research, Semiconductor utilises a different technological approach with each piece, often spending months in science laboratories around the world studying the devices used to make sense of the natural world, these include; CERN, Geneva (2015); NASA Space Sciences Laboratory, UC Berkeley, California (2005); Mineral Sciences Laboratory, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (2010); Extreme Light Laboratory, University of Glasgow (2023) and the Charles Darwin Research Station, Galapagos (2010).

Quadrature
Artist DuoQuadrature’s artistic research focuses on data and physical experiments. The Berlin based artist duo understands technology as means to read and write realities. Together they pursues a transdisciplinary approach, using various media such as time-based performance and installation as well as classical sculptural and two-dimensional works.
For some years, the artists have been working on the methods and stories involved in exploring our world and the cosmos around us. For Quadrature the universe represents an intangible but very real place for their reflections, evoking both the most elemental emotions and the most advanced scientific theories. The boundaries and limitations the human mind and its physical representations encounter resonates in all their work.
The members Juliane Götz, Sebastian Neitsch and formerly Jan Bernstein (until 2016), have won several awards and scholarships for their artistic practice, including recognition by the Prix Ars Electronica in 2015 and 2018, scholarships from the Kunstfonds Bonn, Akademie Schloss Solitude and LaBecque, as well as a fellowship from PODIUM Esslingen and the Hertz-lab of the ZKM Karlsruhe (Centre of Art and Media). Their works are shown around the world in various festivals and exhibitions.
