What is the role of bitcoin, stable coins, and other tools in ensuring a sustainable and equitable finance system?
At the inception of cryptocurrencies stood the ideal of increasing access to finance through its decentralized system independent from banks.
Nowadays, many people have invested in such assets, and they’ve also found their way into everyday transactions. But have they delivered on leveling the playing field?
This hybrid event will be drawing from experiences of the city of Lugano, an Italian-speaking city in the south of Switzerland, that is embracing bitcoin for its everyday economic activities, while complementing it with the buzzing crypto ecosystem in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Bio
Jillian Grennan
Associate Professor of Finance and Law at Santa Clara UniversityJillian Grennan is an Associate Professor of Finance and Law at Santa Clara University, where she is also a Faculty Scholar in the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. Professor Grennan’s academic interests span finance, law, culture, and innovation. Her research examines how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and crypto-based applications of decentralization are changing the future of work.
Professor Grennan has published in leading academic journals, is an editor at Cambridge Elements in Law, Economics, and Politics, and has received more than 15 competitive awards for her research. Professor Grennan received her Ph.D. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. from Georgetown University, and a B.A. from Wellesley College. Grennan was previously on the faculty at Duke University and UC-Berkeley, and prior to academia, she worked at the U.S. Federal Reserve Board of Governors, the World Trade Organization, and KPMG.
