Climate Ring: Glam Slam for the Planet

12 rounds. 3 days. 1 fight for the planet.
In Round 12 of the boxing-themed Climate Ring, join us for a celebration hosted by Swiss-born nightlife impresaria Susanne Bartsch, featuring a climate-themed performance by Choke Hole.

Every boxer faces setbacks, but the true measure of a fighter’s greatness is how many times they get back up to keep fighting. The Climate Ring takes inspiration from those who have fought for a better future, from athletes struggling for civil rights to New York’s LGBTQ+ communities fighting for acceptance. Our host partner Performance Space New York has been a part of that struggle. Founded in 1980, it has been a haven for queer and radical voices who have been dissolving the borders of performing arts, dance, theater, music, visual art, poetry, prose, ritual, nightlife, food, film, and technology. Another champion in this fight is Susanne Bartsch, New York City’s Swiss-born patron saint of transformation and inclusion and a longtime LGBTQIA+ advocate, whose lasting impact on the city’s cultural life was recognized with the Swiss Grand Award for Design by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture in 2022.

In the final round of the Climate Ring, we celebrate the strength, joy, and community that can be found in the fight for a better future. Join us for Glam Slam, a celebration featuring a climate-themed performance by drag wrestling collective Choke Hole, and a cocktail reception hosted by Susanne Bartsch and Gage Spex, with music by DJ William Francis.

Choke Hole

Choke Hole places a queer lens on the traditionally machismo world of wrestling, using drag and queer performance to intensify and make apparent the inherently flamboyant and camp elements of professional wrestling. The show combines lip sync performances, choreographed wrestling matches, acting, character building, and video elements to create an immersive nightlife experience. Choke Hole Matches are defined by one of the most important queer performative tools, exaggeration. In this show, exclusive to the Climate Ring, a seafaring lesbian climate hacktivist takes on a white dreadlocked hippie cop for using too many single-use plastic straws.
