Responsibilities

As an Academic Associate at Swissnex in Boston, you will join a dynamic team working in a creative and collaborative environment located between Harvard and MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. You will be responsible for a wide variety of activities, including but not limited to:

  • Managing academic exchange programs of staff from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences to the Boston area. Tasks include: establishing contacts in local academic institutions for scholarly meetings, introducing Swiss visitors to the Boston ecosystem, providing hospitality and logistical support, and managing general project budgeting and reporting.
  • Coordinating the visit of a class of MBA students from the School of Management Fribourg for a week-long deep dive into the Boston ecosystem and integrating the program into an online course project. This will include identifying and recruiting startups to pose business challenges for the students to address, as well as organizing company visits, events, and lectures to inform the students’ work.
  • Organizing and coordinating a delegation of faculty and staff from Zurich School of Applied Sciences seeking partnerships in food innovation in the Boston area. This will include seeking the correct partners, establishing contacts, arranging meetings, and managing delegation logistics.
  • Developing networks and relationships in both the local and Swiss landscapes in the fields of higher education and scientific research. Specific outreach to find speakers, audiences, and partners for conferences, workshops, study tours, and other events and initiatives.
  • All phases of event and project management (planning, budgeting, execution, follow-up) for events and delegations in higher education.
  • Conducting background research on various consulting projects and initiatives in areas such as life sciences, quantum technology, and higher education policies.
  • Serving as the main point of contact for Swiss professional visitors in the Swissnex space in Boston.
  • Tracking and reporting on activities in our database and to our headquarters.
  • Some domestic (US) travel to support conferences and events.
Requirements
  • This internship position requires that the candidate studies in a university or university of applied sciences in Switzerland towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and is requested to do an internship in order to obtain the degree, or the last university degree (Bachelor/Master) is not older than one year at the beginning of the internship
  • The candidate must not yet have professional experience in the field of his/her studies
  • The total period of internships (including this one) in the federal government may not exceed 12 months

As a member of the Swissnex team, you are expected to take full ownership for accomplishing different requests and projects from Swiss and Brazilian stakeholders, to identify and explore opportunities to shape a sustainable portfolio of future activities, and to expand and deepen our relationships with Brazilian and Swiss partners.

Job Description

A key part of the mission of Swissnex in Boston and New York involves supporting a variety of Swiss startups as they explore their prospects in the United States. Swissnex is a key component of several startup and entrepreneurship programs within Switzerland’s innovation ecosystem, fostering its competitive edge through internationalization.

A wide range of actors make up this ecosystem, and the Startup Lead in Boston will be highly engaged in every part of it. It is likely they will work with everyone from entrepreneurial students to seasoned serial entrepreneurs, as well as with investors, governmental partners, service providers, and all types of incubation and acceleration platforms.

The Startup Lead supports and reports to the Head of Innovation at Swissnex in Boston. Together, they will ensure that all innovation activities run smoothly from initiation to execution to closing.

These responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Planning, developing, and executing a variety of startup and entrepreneurship programs— from our online “market entry” and “market validation” camps to in-person bootcamps, meetings, and pitch events
  • Supporting individual Swiss startups in a tailored manner, helping them to achieve specific goals in the US
  • Pitching our programs to potential startup participants in Switzerland
