The contemporary legal system is facing challenges in meeting the needs of society. Legal representation is increasingly costly, leading to a widening gap in access to justice, not only for private persons, but for businesses of all sizes. While the legal profession has historically been slow to adopt new technologies, the emergence of large language models and AI have the potential to transform the law and its social impact.
In this edition, Robert Mahari, a Swiss-American researcher at Harvard Law School and the MIT Media Lab, will give insight into his work in the field of computational law: leveraging computation to analyze, improve, and extend legal study and practice. This talk explores how AI can enhance the legal profession while also highlighting the risks of automating away the human dimension of justice.
Broadway Bites is a monthly lunch event at Swissnex, bringing guest speakers from Swissnex’s global network to give a short talk on their work.

Robert Mahari is pursuing a joint JD-PhD degree at Harvard Law School and the MIT Media Lab. His work focuses on Computational Law leveraging computation to analyze, improve, and extend the study and practice of law. Robert’s research aims to bridge the gap between technology and law to surface new quantitative insights into legal systems and to identify computational approaches to legal practice. By formalizing research around computational law, he seeks to deepen our understanding of legal processes, build better tools for legal practitioners, and expand access to justice. Robert also studies the role artificial intelligence can play in regulation and compliance, especially for AI regulation. Through collaborations with private and public entities worldwide, he prototypes and deploys practice-oriented computational legal solutions in real-world settings.
