
Climate change is already impacting our cities — decarbonization and climate resilience are now imperatives, not options. Technical innovation offers real tools to meet these challenges: buildings that are more efficient in their energy consumption and embodied carbon, and new ways of modeling and optimizing urban systems at scale. Whether through retrofitting what’s already built or rethinking new construction, solutions are more available than ever. But availability is not the same as results. Getting these solutions integrated into the established, highly regulated planning processes requires political will, agility, and collaboration across disciplines.
Swissnex and the ETH Alumni Association present a conversation across disciplinary silos on urban climate adaptation during Climate Week NYC, Showcasing cutting-edge technology developed by ETH spin-offs and discussing what it takes to apply the knowledge and tools available at scale.

Markus Schlaepfer
Professor
Columbia UniversityMarkus Schläpfer is interested in data-driven urban science approaches for the design of sustainable infrastructures in cities. His research utilizes large-scale human activity data to understand how people use urban space and translates these insights into detailed infrastructure demand predictions. Applications focus on the efficiency of integrated infrastructures, such as coupled transportation and energy systems.
In his research, Markus Schläpfer combines mathematical approaches from Complex Systems Science (e.g., network theory, scaling analysis), tools from Data Analytics (e.g., machine learning), and state-of-the-art infrastructure modeling and engineering techniques (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation, techno-economic assessment).
Markus Schläpfer’s work has been published in top-tier venues such as Nature (twice) and has been covered in the media worldwide. He won several prizes, including the First Prize in the Data for Development Challenge (2015), and he has been Finalist in the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year (2021). He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from ETH Zurich and conducted postdoctoral fellowships at MIT and the Santa Fe Institute. Before joining Columbia University, he was a Principal Investigator at the ETH Future Cities Laboratory and an Assistant Professor (adjunct) at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore while also holding a position at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Leeland McPhail
Principal & Founder
Here HereLeeland McPhail is founding principal of Here Here, a practice with one foot in community advocacy and the other in architecture. From his work with Ghana Free Community Libraries, he brings experience navigating the complex interrelationships of labor, ecology, economy and theory and a belief that the discipline of architecture has a responsibility to support and lift up communities.
Prior to founding Here Here, McPhail’s work ranged from research on and design of mass timber construction with Gray Organschi to large-scale affordable housing developments with Bernheimer Architecture to obsessively designed and detailed commercial, cultural and institutional work with BLDGS. He also sees the need to step out of the pristine, controlled environment of the office and into a sometimes messy community. He’s done this most recently in Atlanta, where he lived and practiced for the past few years, by leading projects for Neighbor in Need to combat gentrification and by organizing within his community to combat predatory development practices.
Before practice, McPhail was the Frederick C. Bland Scholar at Yale School of Architecture, where he earned his MArch. He earned his BSArch at Georgia Tech, where he was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi medal and was a President’s Scholar. He works both locally and globally, and his work has been exhibited internationally.

Lee Altman
Principal
SCAPELee Altman, AIA, LEED AP, is a Principal at SCAPE. She draws on her experience in city government as well as her past work with architects, artists, scientists and public health professionals to form a multifaceted perspective in managing landscape, urban design and infrastructure projects. Within SCAPE, she works to develop firmwide project management systems and processes and facilitates peer learning across project teams.
Lee holds a Master’s in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University, where she received the Lucille Smyser Lowenfish Memorial Prize, the GSAPP Honor Award for Excellence and the William Kinne Travel Fellowship. She currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the same program at Columbia. Lee also holds a Bachelor’s in Architecture with Honors from the Israel Institute of Technology.

Before joining VAULTED, Carmen spent almost eight years at EY-Parthenon, where she co-founded EY Sustainability and helped build and scale the practice from the ground up. She advised leading organizations across Europe and the Middle East on strategy, growth, sustainability and business transformation, including secondments to Roche and ADNOC.
Throughout her career, she has been driven by one question: How can breakthrough ideas become scalable businesses with lasting impact? Daniel Sanz Pont
Founder & CEO
Aeroskin TechDr. Daniel Sanz Pont is a technology entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Aeroskin Tech, and a senior scientific researcher at ETH Zurich. He has spent more than 15 years developing aerogel-based technologies for the construction industry, bridging scientific research, industrial development and entrepreneurship. His industry background includes three years as CTO of a leading Swiss and European aerogel distributor, working across advanced materials, product certification and validation, and market applications. His entrepreneurial perspective has also been shaped by a strong family-business culture. He completed a business specialization at Wharton and is an inventor on three aerogel-related patent applications, including a granted European patent. Daniel holds an international PhD in materials science focused on aerogel composites, completed between UPM Madrid and ETH Zurich. Originally trained as an architect, he also holds master’s degrees in building physics and quality and risk management and was an associated researcher at the NCCR Digital Fabrication (NCCR DFAB) at ETH Zurich. His work has taken aerogel technologies from material and component development through building-physics validation to full-scale demonstrators. At Aeroskin Tech, he is translating this multidisciplinary experience into industrialized building-renovation solutions combining high-performance insulation, digital building capture, AI-enabled workflows and robotic fabrication to make complex façade retrofits faster, thinner and more scalable.

Sophie Chanson
Urban Development Specialist
The World BankSophie Chanson is an architect who has spent the past decade working with cities to build differently — reclaiming street space for non-motorized transport and recreational activities, building climate-resilient infrastructure, and insisting that the people who use these spaces participate in designing them.
As an Urban Development Specialist at the World Bank, she led resilient infrastructure projects across Latin America and the Caribbean, implementing a 2.4km long urban biosphere park in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, developing a flood-resilient waterfront promenade in Cap Haitien, Haiti, and improving public spaces in low-income neighborhoods of La Paz, Bolivia, among others. Prior to joining the World Bank, she supported the negotiations for the New Urban Agenda at UN Habitat in New York. Currently, she works as an independent consultant advising cities and institutions on climate resilience and participatory planning. Sophie holds a Master of Science in Architecture from ETH Zurich.
