NextStep Program: A Promising Start to International VET Internships

The inaugural year of the NextStep Program has successfully paved the way for young Swiss vocational education and training (VET) graduates to gain professional experience in Japan. Launched as a pilot initiative by the Cantons of Vaud and Zurich, with the support of Swissnex in Japan and Movetia, the program has already demonstrated its potential to foster international collaboration and knowledge exchange.

A Strong First Cohort

In its pilot phase, the program welcomed nine Swiss VET graduates to Japan, who were placed in three host companies across various industries. These internships, which range from three to twelve months, have provided the interns with hands-on experience in a dynamic work environment while allowing Japanese companies to benefit from Swiss expertise and professionalism.

Initial feedback from both the interns and host companies has been overwhelmingly positive. Interns have highlighted the value of working in an international setting, gaining insights into Japanese business culture, and expanding their professional networks. Companies, in turn, have expressed appreciation for the strong technical skills, adaptability, and work ethic of the Swiss interns.

Scaling Up for the Future

Building on this success, the program is set to expand significantly in the next round. Nine companies have already confirmed their participation, reflecting growing interest from Japanese businesses in hosting Swiss VET graduates.

This growth signals a promising future for NextStep as it continues to bridge Swiss and Japanese expertise, enabling young professionals to thrive in an international context. As the program evolves, it remains committed to enhancing global mobility opportunities for Swiss VET graduates while providing Japanese companies with skilled, motivated talent.

For companies interested in participating, NextStep offers a unique opportunity to connect with top-tier Swiss talent. With internships fully supported by the program, businesses can benefit from Swiss VET graduates’ technical knowledge, cross-cultural perspectives, and innovative mindset.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to build on this successful beginning, strengthening ties between Switzerland and Japan through the power of education and professional exchange.
