Assemblies are a cornerstone of Swiss democracy: citizens gathering to debate and decide on their future together. Each September, New York hosts assemblies of its own, it becomes the meeting point of world leaders at UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, and the climate community during Climate Week NYC, which this year brought more than 120,000 attendees to over 1,500 events across the city. Inspired by these global gatherings, Swissnex convened Assembly, the Swiss presence at Climate Week NYC 2026. The four-day program brought together scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, artists, designers, journalists, diplomats, and students, not to pass resolutions, but to put ideas and connections together.
In the world of art, assembly, or assemblage, has another meaning: a work built from fragments, each part taking on new significance through juxtaposition. The venue for the twelve sessions was designed with this in mind. Drawing inspiration from the iconic scaffolding of NYC, students from the Master of Arts in Interior Architecture program at the Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD-Genève) transformed the Keith Haring Theater at Performance Space New York into an ever-changing, endlessly adaptable environment, built to host conversations and encounters on climate thinking and collective action.
In this same spirit, we present a collection of voices and ideas from our Assembly events, placed in conversation with each other. Out of these encounters, several threads emerge: the importance of a translation across disciplines, the need to root our responses in local context, the difficulty of measuring impact, the promise of circular solutions, and the double-edged nature of AI in our age of climate crisis.
Read on to explore the ideas that stuck with us from Assembly.
