British-Swiss Workshop on Quantum Materials

Swiss and UK scientists will meet in London to accelerate international collaboration on quantum materials research.

May 23, 2023 |  London

On June 1-2, 2023, the Embassy of Switzerland in the United Kingdom is hosting a dialogue on quantum materials between Swiss and UK scientists. The meeting, “Adaptive quantum materials & quantum technologies: Towards a Roadmap for British-Swiss Collaboration” will bring together researchers from Swiss and UK universities to survey the state of research on adaptive quantum materials in the two countries, outline complementarities, and discuss possibilities for collaborations.

New, specially-designed adaptive materials make possible much more precise control of quantum mechanical phenomena than can be achieved with naturally-occuring materials, promising to unlock new possibilities in quantum computing, sensing, and communications technology. This meeting aims to establish a roadmap for British-Swiss cooperation on the fundamental science and applications of such adaptive quantum materials.

The meeting will include presentations by leading researchers from universities and research centers in both countries. The UK perspective will be represented by speakers from the University of Cambridge, the University of Southampton, the University of Nottingham, the University of Leeds, Imperial College London, The University of Manchester, and the UK National Physical Laboratory; the Swiss delegation will include researchers from ETH Zurich, the University of Basel, and the University of Geneva.

The meeting was organized by Prof. Alberto Morpurgo (University of Geneva), Prof. Renato Renner (ETH Zurich), Profs. Vladimir Falko and Richard Curry (University of Manchester), and Lutz-Peter Berg, Head of Science & Innovation at the Embassy of Switzerland in the UK, a member of the global Swissnex network.

This event is part of Project Quantum, Swissnex’s initiative to connect Switzerland and the world in quantum science and technology.
