Swiss and Chinese experts and scholars took up the above questions at the 4th Sino-Swiss Research Integrity Workshop: Boundary Conditions and Governance Frameworks, held on 26 June 2026 at the Residence of the Embassy of Switzerland in China.

Swissnex in China and Frontiers now publish a synthesis of the discussion as a white paper, released on the International Day for Universal Access to Information.

About the workshop

The workshop brought together researchers, scholars, and institutional representatives from Switzerland and China to discuss where the boundaries of acceptable AI use in research should lie, and which governance frameworks can support them. Its title reflects the two parts of that task: defining the conditions under which AI can be used responsibly, and building the structures that keep research trustworthy once it is.

What the white paper covers

The paper explores how research integrity can adapt to AI-driven transformation. It centers on four themes:

• Transparency in how AI is used across the research process
• Responsible data governance
• Collaboration that leads to concrete, actionable steps
• A shared Swiss and Chinese contribution to a trustworthy global research ecosystem

Why it matters now

Access to reliable information depends on research that can be trusted. As AI tools become part of everyday research work, questions about disclosure, accountability, and data stewardship apply to researchers, publishers, and institutions in every country. Publishing the paper on the International Day for Universal Access to Information ties the discussion to that broader goal of open and dependable knowledge.
