Some of the most critical science stories of our time are found in data, from a changing climate to evolving pandemics. How can large datasets be transformed into films, new stories, and other public experiences that support understanding and action?
Join us for an evening with leading data storytellers Abhinanda Bhattacharyya from the Los Angeles Times, Daisy Chung from Reuters, Robert Simmon, cartographer and science communicator for Planet, and Ryan Wyatt from the California Academy of Sciences, moderated by Ryan Wyatt. We’ll see examples of how scientific data can be transformed into meaningful stories, and explore the intersection of storytelling, technology, and ethics.

Abhinanda Bhattacharyya
Data and Graphics Journalist, Los Angeles TimesAbhinanda Bhattacharyya is a data and graphics journalist at the Los Angeles Times. She has a background in technology, math and education, and previously worked for the interactive storytelling team at National Geographic and the graphics and engineering team at the San Francisco Chronicle. She has a master’s degree in journalism from USC Annenberg.

Daisy Chung
Graphics Journalist and Science IllustratorDaisy Chung is an award-winning science visual communicator and illustrator originally from Taiwan and New Zealand. She currently works as a Graphics Journalist at Reuters Graphics creating interactive infographic designs, with a focus on environmental and biological topics.
Previously, she was a Graphics Editor at National Geographic, where she worked with a talented team to engage the public through powerful visual storytelling. Daisy aims to make science more accessible to a broader audience with art. Her work has appeared in Scientific American, National Geographic, Cell Press, and various platforms.

Ryan Wyatt
Senior Director of Morrison Planetarium and Science Visualization, California Academy of SciencesRyan Wyatt has written and directed the Academy’s eight award-winning planetarium shows—science documentaries that rely on visualization to tell their stories, on topics ranging from astronomy to geology, from ecosystem science to cutting-edge technology.
Wyatt is cofounder and vice president of Immersive Media Entertainment, Research, Science, and Art (IMERSA), a professional organization dedicated to advancing the art and technology of immersive digital experiences. He served as co-chair of the 2017 and 2019 Gordon Research Conferences on Visualization in Science and Education.

Bio
Robert Simmon
Senior Data Visualization Engineer at Planet LabsRobert Simmon is a cartographer and science communicator who specializes in visualizing satellite imagery. He currently works for Planet, where he helps create near-daily medium-res imagery of the Earth, maps Planetary Variables and designs bespoke graphics for media. Before that he co-created the NASA Earth Observatory, a website dedicated to communicating Earth and remote sensing science. His work has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and web sites, including the front page of the New York Times and the cover of National Geographic. He is also known for crafting the Blue Marble featured on the original Apple iPhone.
