Swissnex Window #1: Design With Wood

Swissnex in Japan presents Design with Wood, the first exhibition in the Swissnex Window series, showcasing the innovative work of five emerging designers in Switzerland: Fabien Roy, Amandine Gini, Victor Moynier, Ramona Hess, and Salomon Elsler. Through their unique approaches to sustainable furniture design, these designers explore how wood—often discarded or overlooked—can be reimagined as a valuable resource.

Reimagining Timber: Turning Waste into Sustainable Design

Ramona Hess highlights the potential of small, cracked, or discolored wood scraps, urging the industry to view them as assets rather than waste. Amandine Gini and Victor Moynier’s FORMWORK transforms construction wood, blending spruce and oak to reduce the demand for virgin timber. Salomon Elsler’s re: collection uses pest-infested hardwoods, drawing attention to climate change’s impact on forests. Fabien Roy’s Common Curves revives high-quality wood from Switzerland’s Joux Valley, traditionally used in crafts, with a design inspired by Japanese artistry. Supported by Presence Switzerland and State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), Design with Wood invites visitors to discover new perspectives on sustainable design, where innovation meets ecological awareness.
