Swiss-Japan Energy Days 2026 will focus on the future of electricity grid resilience and demand management, exploring how Switzerland and Japan are addressing increasingly complex energy challenges through research, technology, and cross-sector collaboration.
Organized simultaneously in Japan and Switzerland, the event serves as a platform for international collaboration in energy research, innovation, and policy.

Anna Fontcuberta i Morral holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from Barcelona and a PhD in materials science from France. She worked as a postdoc at Caltech before co-founding Aonex Technologies, a startup that developed substrates for LEDs and solar cells. She went on to earn a Habilitation in experimental physics in Munich. She joined EPFL in 2008 and was promoted to full professor in 2019. Alongside her research, Fontcuberta i Morral actively promotes education and supports young scientists and engineers, especially young women pursuing technical careers. She became president of EPFL on 1 January 2025.

Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) – Benoît Revaz has been Director of the SFOE since 2016. Prior to his current position, he held various management positions in Entreprises Electriques Fribourgeoises (now Group E), EOS Holding, Alpiq Holding and E-CUBE Strategy Consultants.

Dr. Toshihiro Tanaka (BEng 1980, DEng 1985, Osaka Univ.) became Professor in 2002. His research focuses on high-temperature materials processing, contributing to advanced materials design, and industrial process optimization. He has received numerous awards. As Dean of Engineering (2015–2019), he promoted international programs and industry collaboration. Since 2019, he has served as Senior Executive Vice President, leading education and research reforms at the University of Osaka.

Tanja Zimmermann is the Director of Empa and a Professor of Materials Science at ETH Zurich and EPF Lausanne. She built up the research topic of cellulose nanocomposites at Empa as a group leader and later as head of department. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Empa Executive Board. She is particularly interested in topics such as resource efficiency and NetZero targets. Tanja Zimmermann is a member of various national and international committees and scientific advisory boards.

Mario Paolone is a Full Professor and Chair of the Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory at the EPFL, Switzerland. He holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy. His research is in power systems, focusing on real-time monitoring, protection, dynamics, and transients. He made fundamental contributions to methods and technologies for situational awareness and control of Active Distribution Networks.

Dr. Kazunari Sasaki graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees.He received his Dr. sc. techn. from ETH Zürich in 1993. After 10 years in Europe at ETH and Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research, he joined Kyushu University in 1999, becoming a professor in 2005 and a senior vice president in 2016. He chairs the Government’s Hydrogen and Ammonia Policy Sub-Committee. His research focuses on materials and processes for fuel cells and electrochemical systems.

Borobotics is developing a new generation of geothermal drill for use in urban areas. Our robots can drill cheaply in confined spaces (<8m2), with low noise & CO2 emissions. The aim is to make geothermal energy more accessible and cost-effective and thus bring it to the mass market. As a spin-off of the ZHAW, we are located in the Technopark Winterthur and employ 16 people. Currently, we are in the development phase and are carrying out drilling tests with our 2nd prototype.

Since 2013, Christian Schaffner has been the Executive Director of the Energy Science Center of ETH Zurich. Before that, he was with the Swiss Federal Office of Energy as head of the grid section, responsible for developing a grid expansion strategy and smart grid roadmap. He was also involved in the bilateral negotiations between Switzerland and the EU regarding a contract on energy supply. He holds an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Electric Power Systems from ETH Zurich.

Ieaki Takeda has served as Director-General of the Kansai Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry since February 2026. Born in Nara in 1971, he joined METI in 1994. He holds an LL.M. in International Economic Law from Paris 1 University. After serving as Counsellor at the Embassy of Japan in France, he was Japan’s delegate to the BIE and Director of Expo Promotion at METI. He was engaged in Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai for about nine years, from its bidding stage through to its successful realization.

Ryoichi Komiyama obtained a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tokyo in 2003. He served as senior researcher in Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), research associate in the University of Tokyo and present position since 2022. His fields of research are energy system modeling and analysis. He is also involved in electricity market design including capacity market, non-fossil value trading etc. in the METI committee.
