For the third and final installment in this conference series, from HESAV and Swissnex in Boston, we will be discussing innovations in the field of Medical Devices.

As one of the fastest growing healthcare industries, medical devices are often conductors of fascinating innovation.

This event is the third installment of a cycle of conferences around the theme of innovation in healthcare and will take place on July 7. Speakers, Patrick Anquetil (CEO – Portal Instruments), Nathaniel Hafer, and Mary Ann Picard of Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center, examine the Medtech ecosystem in Boston today and look toward the future of this rapidly developing field.

This event is jointly presented by Haute École de Santé Vaud (HESAV) and Swissnex in Boston and New York.

    Patrick Anquetil

    Founder and CEO, Portal Instruments, Inc.

    Patrick Anquetil, Ph.D. is Portal Instrument’s Chief Executive Officer. He brings more than 20 years of experience building world-class teams and leading high-tech / tough-tech bioengineering companies from the lab to the marketplace. Prior to founding Portal, he was co-founder of SynapDx, an autism diagnostic company based on RNA expression analysis, and Aretais, a venture in the field of blood glucose monitoring leveraging advances in Coherent Anti-stokes Raman Spectroscopy. Dr. Anquetil began his career as a science and nanotechnology equity research analyst at Susquehanna International Group authoring and marketing equity research reports to hedge funds and portfolio managers. Dr. Anquetil holds a doctorate in bio-instrumentation from MIT, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a master’s degree from the ETH in Zurich and the University of Tokyo. His scientific work has appeared in peer-reviewed publications as well as mainstream media, including MIT Technology Review, Wired Magazine, PBS, and CNBC.

    Nathaniel Hafer

    Director of Operations, University of Massachusetts Center for Clinical and Translational Science (UMCCTS) and Co-Director of the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2)

    Dr. Nate Hafer serves as the Director of Operations for UMCCTS. In this role, he is responsible for the overall financial and administrative activities of the UMCCTS. This includes acting as a liaison to extramural resources (industry, NIH), linking investigators to one another and to research resources, aiding in the development of projects, and directing all UMCCTS pilot funding programs. He also serves as one of the Co-Directors of the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), which serves as a lifeline for smaller medical device and biotech companies, offering inventors and executives easy, affordable, and coordinated access to researchers and resources at the Lowell and Worcester campuses of UMass. He is an Assistant Professor in the Program in Molecular Medicine at UMass Medical School (UMMS) and leads the UMMS I-Corps program. Previously, Nate was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH). Before joining NIH, Nate worked at the Federation of American Scientists and was a Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellow at the National Academies. Nate completed his Ph.D. in molecular biology at Princeton University and received a BS in biology from Penn State.

    Mary Ann Picard

    Director of Operations, M2D2 at UMass

    Mary Ann has nearly twenty years of business development experience with a specific focus on establishing and maintaining long-term corporate relationships and also to include project management and funds development. As the Director of Operations for M2D2, an incubator program for biotech and medical device entrepreneurs, she is a highly motivated professional who works to combine her areas of expertise to establish interactions among entrepreneurs, inventors, scientists, students, industry, investors, state agencies and others to contribute to a rich entrepreneurial business ecosystem in Massachusetts. M2D2 is a joint project between the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester MA.
