Cosmos Archaeology Workshop: Computational Museology

Join us for a workshop on computational museology with Professor Sarah Kenderdine, Director and Lead Curator of EPFL Pavilions, and gain practical insights from her extensive curatorial experience. Explore the seamless integration and practical application of immersive visualization technologies, visual analytics, aesthetics, and cultural big data.

On May 17th, Swissnex in China, in collaboration with MANA New Media Art Platform, will host a workshop on computational museology, bridging the arts and cutting-edge technology together. The workshop will feature Professor Sarah Kenderdine, Director and Lead Curator of EPFL Pavilions, Director of the Laboratory for Experimental Museology at the EPFL, and the lead curator of the exhibition “Cosmos Archaeology”.

Professor Sarah Kenderdine will take participants on an interdisciplinary journey through the realms of science and art, using “Cosmos Archaeology” as a starting point. Attendees will delve into topics such as interactive archives and emergent narratives, deep fakes and blockchain sovereignties, embodied knowledge systems and performative interfaces, and scientific visualization for museums in the age of experience. This workshop, grounded in practical insights from years of curatorial experience in computational museology, aims to inspire arts professionals to explore more diverse perspectives from the realms of science, art, and humanities. It advocates for deep integration and application of immersive visualisation technologies, visual analytics, aesthetics and cultural (big) data.

Keynote Speech: Computational Museology

Prof. Sarah Kenderdine

Professor Sarah Kenderdine researches at the forefront of interactive and immersive experiences for galleries, libraries, archives and museums. In widely exhibited installation works, she has amalgamated tangible and intangible cultural heritage with new media art practice, especially in the realms of interactive cinema, augmented reality and embodied narrative. Sarah has produced and curated over 100 exhibitions and installations for museums worldwide including permanent museums in India and Taiwan and, received a number of major international awards for this work. Sarah is a professor at the École Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, where she has built the Laboratory for Experimental Museology (eM+), exploring the convergence of cultural heritage, imaging technologies, immersive visualization, digital aesthetics, and cultural (big) data. Since 2017, Sarah has been the director and lead curator of EPFL Pavilions. Her upcoming book is Deep Fakes: A Critical Lexicon of Digital Museology (Routledge: 2024).
