Workshop at UFRJ: Seeing the Unseen Technology and AI for Art Conservation

About the Event

The workshop gathers some of Brazil’s most esteemed conservation scientists from prestigious museums and universities for an enlightening event. MATIS, a Swiss startup, presents its all-in-one multispectral camera and software. MATIS and professors from the Conservation Science department of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ engage attendees with demonstrations of real-case studies from the Dom João VI Museum, highlighting the capabilities of multispectral technology. Essencis, a Brazilian company that provides scientific instruments, joins the demonstrations to showcase their XRF tool. This event offers a unique opportunity to delve into the latest advancements in conservation technology.

Bio

Marie Didier
MATIS
Marie is the CEO of MATIS. She has a dual educational background in art and Science with 15 years of developing non-destructive imaging methods, either applied for Biology (PhD in Neurophotonics from EPFL) or in Art (Imaging Fellow at National Gallery of Art in Washington). Marie has experience in R&D, image processing, and optics, and MATIS is the logical continuity of her 20 years of academic and professional background.

Daniel Lima Marques de Aguiar
UFRJ
With a doctorate in Chemistry focused on spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, Daniel joined the School of Fine Arts at UFRJ through the newly established Bachelor’s program in Conservation and Restoration to teach conservation science. Passionate about the intersection of science and the arts, he works closely with conservators and students at UFRJ, supporting them in developing more effective strategies to preserve Brazilian cultural heritage through his scientific expertise.

Humberto Farias
UFRJ
Humberto is a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, teaching Conservation of Contemporary Art. He holds a Master’s in Art History and Criticism from UFRJ and a PhD in Conservation and Restoration from the Universidad Politécnica de Valéncia. He participated in an Academic Residency at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2014 and the visiting scholar program of The Moving Image Archiving & Preservation Program at New York University in 2016. He was an adjunct researcher on several projects funded by the Getty Foundation. From 2009 to 2014, he was a member of IBEU’s cultural committee, curating several solo exhibitions.

Charlotte Bonniot
MATIS
Charlotte joined MATIS as an R&D and project management intern while completing her Master’s thesis. With a background in optics engineering and a deep passion for the arts, she took a gap year to explore the intersection of science and visual art through creating a documentary. At MATIS, she applies her knowledge of optics to the study of paintings and aims to build meaningful collaborations with stakeholders across the art world.

Gabriela Devaud
Swissnex in Brazil
As Art & Science Program Manager at Swissnex in Brazil, Gabriela works to integrate architecture, design, and art with innovation, technology, and science, creating possibilities for transdisciplinary projects connecting partners from Switzerland to South America. In parallel, she is involved in international projects in an art Gallery. Previously, she worked as a Project Manager for the organizing committee of the Rio2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where she gained extensive experience in major events’ management and production. Gabriela holds a Master’s in Architecture and Urbanism from ETH, Zürich, and Project Management in Art and Culture from Rome Business School.
