A Journey Through Japan's Cultural and Artistic Landscape
Under the expert guidance of Fiammetta Pennisi, in charge of Art-Science at Swissnex in Japan, the study group explored several of Japan’s iconic locations, including Kyoto, Osaka, and Kanazawa. Each destination offered unique experiences that sparked creativity and inspiration among the students.
Kyoto: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
In Kyoto, the group visited the atelier of artist Kohei Nawa, named Sandwich, which served as an immersive introduction to contemporary Japanese art. This experience gave students insights into the fusion of traditional and modern artistic practices, emphasizing the importance of innovation in preserving cultural heritage.
Kanazawa: A Hub of Contemporary Art
Kanazawa, known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant art scene, was another highlight of the trip. The students toured the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, where they delved into contemporary art exhibits that challenge conventional perceptions and stimulate creative thinking. A Craftsmanship Legacy Additionally, the group visited the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum, which provided a deep appreciation for Japan’s craftsmanship traditions. The museum’s collection of tools and exhibits showcased the precision and artistry inherent in Japanese carpentry, offering valuable lessons in the importance of technique and dedication to craft.
Hands-on Experience
Awaji Island and Osaka
A stay at Awaji Island allowed the group to witness innovative projects by Pasona Inc., a company known for its forward-thinking approaches to business and community development. The visit included an exploration of Pasona’s initiatives that blend agriculture, technology, and social responsibility, offering a practical perspective on sustainable development.
The trip to Osaka was marked by an engaging discussion with the Expo 2025 Osaka committee. Students had the opportunity to learn about the ambitious plans for the upcoming World Expo, focusing on themes of sustainability and innovation. This interaction highlighted the role of design in shaping future societies and addressing global challenges.
