Ramona Hess highlights the potential of small, cracked, or discolored wood scraps, urging the industry to view them as assets rather than waste. Amandine Gini and Victor Moynier’s FORMWORK transforms construction wood, blending spruce and oak to reduce the demand for virgin timber. Salomon Elsler’s re: collection uses pest-infested hardwoods, drawing attention to climate change’s impact on forests. Fabien Roy’s Common Curves, created in collaboration with bentwood manufacturer Kurikyu, revives high-quality wood from Switzerland’s Joux Valley, traditionally used in crafts, with a design inspired by Japanese artistry. Supported by Presence Switzerland and State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), Design with Wood invites visitors to discover new perspectives on sustainable design, where innovation meets ecological awareness.

Founded in 1874, Kurikyu is a long-established manufacturer of Odate Magewappa (bentwood), a specialty of Akita Prefecture. At Kurikyu, the sixth generation of traditional craftsmen is led by Shunji Kurimori, an acclaimed master of bentwood. The company creates a new form of magewappa, aiming to propose products that enrich modern life. Odate Magewappa is a woodwork made of elastic Akita cedar that is shaved thin, softened with boiling water, rolled into a cylindrical shape and glued together. It has long been used for lunch boxes, rice bowls, and cooked rice containers, and is characterized by its lightness and the fragrance of the wood.
