Open Call | CSCS-USI Summer School 2026 on High-Performance Computing and Data Analytics

Intermediate graduate students can apply for the CSCS-USI Summer School 2026, a week-long programme focused on high-performance computing (HPC), GPU programming and data analytics. The summer school will take place from July 25 to July 31, 2026 at Hotel Serpiano in Switzerland, with opportunities for digital participation. Application deadline is April 12.

Organised by the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) at ETH Zurich and the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), this summer school provides intensive training in effective high-performance computing and GPU-accelerated data analytics.

The programme combines lectures with extensive hands-on lab sessions designed to help participants apply theoretical concepts in practical HPC environments. Teaching sessions will run 26–31 July from 09:00 to 16:00 CEST, with additional Q&A sessions for remote participants.

Topics covered include:

  • GPU architectures
  • GPU programming with CUDA
  • Programming models for HPC
  • Memory management
  • Performance optimisation and scientific libraries
  • GPU-accelerated computing with Python
  • CUDA Python
  • Numerical and communication libraries

The course structure prioritises practical learning, with lectures limited to roughly half of the programme and the remaining time dedicated to hands-on exercises and interactive sessions supported by mentors.

  • Participants attending in person will also benefit from:
  • Two keynote presentations from invited speakers
  • Collaborative learning and networking opportunities
  • A mid-week excursion in the surrounding area
  • A visit to the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano

Participation Options

The programme offers two participation formats:

  • In-person participation: Held at Hotel Serpiano on Mount San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with accommodation and meals included
  • Remote participation: Students can attend lectures live via Zoom and participate in hands-on sessions remotely, with recordings available if time zones prevent live attendance

ECTS Credits

Students can take an in-person exam on 31 July to earn 6 ECTS credits from the Faculty of Informatics at USI. The exam consists of a quiz covering the course objectives and content.

Who Can Apply?

The summer school is intended for intermediate graduate students, including:

  • Third-year Bachelor’s students
  • Master’s students
  • PhD students
  • Early-stage postdoctoral researchers

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Good knowledge of C/C++ and basic knowledge of Python
  • A basic understanding of MPI
  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environments and programming tools
  • A need for HPC skills in their research or work

Participants will work on their own laptops during practical sessions, with temporary access credentials provided for supercomputing resources.

Fees

  • Online participation: Free of charge
  • In-person participation: CHF 550, including six nights’ accommodation (shared room), meals, mentoring, an excursion and a visit to CSCS

Only 30 students will be selected for the in-person programme.

Application Deadline: 12 April 2026 (CEST). Applicants will be notified of the selection outcome by 15 May 2026.
