As part of the Planetary Embassy in Belém during the UN climate summit COP30, the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA), in partnership with Swissnex, invites you to the event “Anticipating Future Science for Ecosystems to Accelerate Solutions for People, Society, and the Planet.”
As the world approaches critical ecological tipping points, understanding how future science can enhance and revitalise ecosystems is vital. This session will explore how emerging science and technologies can drive eco‑augmentation, amplifying nature’s resilience and benefits for people, society, and the planet. It will reveal both the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow’s innovations, inspiring collective action toward sustainable, science-informed solutions and anticipatory governance.

Massamba Thioye is Project Executive at the UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub at the UNFCCC secretariat, where he leads, the development of regulations pertaining to the measurement of climate action impact, incentive mechanisms for climate and sustainability action, and a framework to enhance the use of innovation to support climate and sustainability actions. He is also Advisory Committee member of the European Green Digital Coalition, Advisory Committee member of the Innovate4Cities conference, and member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the Net Zero Guidelines. Massamba Thioye is also a co-chair of GESDA’s eco-agumentation initiative.

WarīNkwī Flores is a first-generation Andean Kara and Andean-Amazonian Kichwa PhD student at the University of Arizona. He is an Indigenous Nature Finance and Technology Pioneer; Founder and Consultant at Kinray Hub, an Indigenous R&D Think-Do Tank; and Ancestral Territory Trustee, Chichup’mp’ Clan, Kara and Kichwa Nation, Cotacachi, Ecuador. WarīNkwī Flores develops innovative frameworks that connect Indigenous institutionality, data sovereignty, and relational science & technology with financial mechanisms for environmental markets, with a focus on planetary regeneration. WarīNkwī Flores, as Technical Co-Lead for the BCA-IAPB-WEF Marine Biodiversity Credits Collaboration and a member of the Pooled Fund Steering Committee with Rights and Resources Initiative, supports how climate finance flows to frontline communities. As Translational Leader with the UN Biodiversity Credits Alliance – International Environmental Guardianship (IEG), he supports nature-related financial disclosure and Indigenous shareholdership in environmental market innovation and strategy. As IPBES Fellow for the 2nd Global Assessment (2025-2028), he contributes to the development of enforcement and compliance mechanisms and, as Co-Chair of the EcoAugmentation Initiative with the Geneva Science & Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA), WarīNkwī centers Indigenous systems, futures, and anticipatory thinking to blueprint the roadmap of integrating emerging technologies (AI, SynBio, etc.,) in national and international frameworks. WarīNkwī Flores’s work on Indigenous data sovereignty (IDS) and governance (IDG), and on biocultural solutions to Sustainable Development Goals, contributed to the 2025 UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples study on Indigenous Peoples Rights to Data, including data collection and disaggregation. He is a translational Indigenous Data Sovereignty & AI governance systems lead with the CEIBA Council, LAC, ensuring that emerging technologies and bio/data economies serve rather than extract from communities. As an Ancestral Territory Trustee accountable to his communities from 2019 to 2030, WarīNkwī Flores offers an authentic Indigenous systems perspective on the intersection of Indigenous institutionality and contemporary mechanisms, ensuring that research, development, and innovation strategies ethically serve the communities and ecosystem resilience.

Alexandre Antonelli is Professor and Executive Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He is also Professor in Biodiversity and Systematics at the University of Gothenburg, a Visiting Professor at the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford and a Distinguished Scientist and Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is a Trustee of WWF International, the President and Co-Founder of the Antonelli Foundations for Biodiversity Research and Conservation, Principal Investigator of the Atlantic Forest Research and Conservation Alliance, Founder of the Hidden Universe: Biodiversity initiative and member of the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits. Alexandre Antonelli studies the distribution, evolution, conservation and sustainable uses of species and develops methods to speed up scientific discovery and innovation. Most recently he has been particularly interested in the application of artificial intelligence techniques, remote sensing and environmental genomics for biodiversity research, conservation and restoration. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters and his work has been cited over 27,000 times. He has been named on the Web of Science “Highly Cited Researchers” list, which identifies pioneering researchers in the top 1% of their field, every year since 2020, and was the recipient of the prestigious 2022 Senckenberg Prize for Nature Research. Bio
Marieke Hood is the Executive Director Impact Translator of GESDA. She joined the foundation at its inception in 2019. Her role is to implement the most advanced science diplomacy solutions ideated by GESDA, working towards their spin-off as independent institutions. This involves prototyping real-world activities, framing their governance and securing their funding. Marieke Hood led the incubation of the Open Quantum Institute, culminating with its launch in March 2024 as part of CERN with the support of UBS. Marieke Hood’s expertise covers emerging science and technology, futures and foresight studies, practice-led multilateral governance, start-up and corporate innovation. Before joining GESDA, she worked for 10 years for the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs. In her latest position, she headed the business section of the Embassy of Switzerland in London, where her projects focused on artificial intelligence and data-driven technology with applications in the financial sector, life sciences, and performance engineering. Marieke Hood holds Master’s Degrees in Business and in Dynamics and Economic Policy from the Sorbonne University and EMLyon Business School.
From November 9 to 21, 2025, the Planetary Embassy comes to life in Belém, Brazil, on the margins of the UN climate summit COP30. Part of a series of pop-up experiences across the global Swissnex network, this edition is hosted in the zoobotanical gardens of the Goeldi Museum, a setting that blends the Amazon's biodiversity, science, ancestral wisdom, and Swiss legacy.
