Swissnex in Brazil is launching of Canopy, a new nature-focused monthly newsletter that explores ideas, people, and partnerships redefining how we engage with the living world.

Canopy tracks what may be called an emerging “nature renaissance” in Brazil and around the world. Across science, technology, and the arts, a growing engagement with long-standing Indigenous and traditional knowledge systems and cosmologies is challenging our understanding of humanity’s relationship with nature. Seen from this perspective, progress is less about inventing the new by taking from the Earth than about creating the conditions for life, in all its forms, to renew itself.

Nowhere is this more visible than in the Amazon. Long viewed by outsiders through the binary lens of either extraction or conservation, it is now becoming the site of a live experiment in nature regeneration. Entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors are working alongside Indigenous and local communities on large-scale reforestation, ecosystem restoration, agroforestry, regenerative supply chains, nature finance, and climate technology. Together, they are laying the foundations of a “socio-bioeconomy” built on the idea that local prosperity and biodiversity can reinforce one another.

Like a tree canopy, Canopy aims to create a space for pause and exchange, enabling unexpected connections to emerge between Brazil, Switzerland, and the wider Swissnex network. In the first edition, Belém-based entrepreneur Paul Reis lays out his vision for the Amazon’s bioeconomy, and Caroline Takita, part of Swissnex’s Expert Network, discusses recent efforts to reshape the region’s image.
