What is COIL?
COIL is an innovative educational approach that connects students and lecturers from different parts of the world in a shared learning experience. COIL leverages digital tools and platforms to facilitate collaborative projects, discussions, and activities between geographically dispersed classrooms or groups. Its primary goal is to enhance intercultural understanding, promote global perspectives, and foster collaborative learning among students, often addressing real-world issues or topics. COIL emphasises the development of cross-cultural communication skills, critical thinking, and collaboration in an online, international context, preparing students for an interconnected and globalised world.

What is the COIL Mastercourse?
The COIL Mastercourse is a comprehensive online course designed for Swiss faculty and lecturers. It aims to equip participants with the skills and expertise required to develop, execute, and deliver effective COIL experiences in their academic settings. Led by a group of global COIL experts, this course emphasises immersive, interactive learning and ‘learning by doing’ methodologies.

Why the COIL Mastercourse?
The COIL Mastercourse is essential for Swiss faculty seeking to expand their teaching horizons and enhance their students’ learning experiences. It offers practical knowledge and hands-on training in COIL methodology, enabling educators to integrate global collaborative learning approaches into their courses. With a low upfront investment of time and resources, this course provides an accessible pathway for faculty to embrace internationalisation in education.

Participants in the COIL Master Course gain a thorough understanding of COIL frameworks, enabling them to structure and implement successful COIL experiences. By bringing their ideas and partners to the course, they have the opportunity to develop ready-to-execute COIL projects. Led by international COIL experts, the course fosters a ‘learning by doing’ environment, emphasising practical application over theoretical concepts. Swiss faculty can leverage this training to internationalise their teaching, broaden their academic networks, and offer students enriching global learning opportunities.

Experts

    Eva Haug

    Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands)

    Eva Haug is the Educational Advisor for Curriculum Internationalisation and COIL/VE and senior lecturer Intercultural Competence at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. She provides professional development for lecturers and staff for internationalisation of the curriculum and online collaboration. Eva has built a sustainable COIL practice at the AUAS of 100+ projects per year. She is also an elected Steering Group member of the EAIE (European Association for International Education) for the Internationalisation at Home expert community, and a research fellow at the University of the Free State (SA) and works as an affiliated trainer for Florida International University.

    Keiko Ikeda

    Kansai University (Japan)

    Keiko Ikeda is a Professor in the Division of International Affairs, and KU-COIL Coordinator at Kansai University. Recently, she has taken the role as the principal project manager for the Inter-University Exchange Project funded by MEXT, 2018-2022 ("COIL Plus Program to Develop Global Career Mindset"). She is vice director of the Institute for Innovative Global Education (IIGE). She has a Ph.D. from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, specialising in Japanese linguistics, foreign language education, and conversation analysis. Her interests in the international education field are internationalisation at home, constructing active learning programs collaborating with universities overseas.

    Reinout Klamer

    The Hague University of Applied Sciences, THUAS (Netherlands)

    Reinout Klamer, MA, is the institutional Virtual Collaboration Coordinator, a Researcher, and a Senior Lecturer at the Hague University of Applied Sciences. As the institutional Virtual Collaboration Coordinator, Reinout plays a leading role in implementing the institutional strategic plan for Internationalisation at Home and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Reinout also focuses on research and projects regarding COIL. He is a Senior lecturer in Facility Management, for which he has been awarded European Teacher of the Year in 2023, based on his work related to COIL.

    Thierry Villard

    University of Bordeaux (France)

    Thierry Villard is a senior language teacher, mobility officer, and head of Studies at the Institute of Technology part of Université de Bordeaux, France. He is an elected Steering group member of the EAIE (European Association for International Education) for the Language and Culture expert community for the 2022-2024 term. He is also involved in the internationalisation of the curriculum. Thierry has piloted several Virtual Exchange and blended mobility projects. He has also designed and participated in virtual exchange projects in engineering education for sustainable development.

    Fray Martín Martínez Páez

    Universidad del Rosario (Colombia)

    Fray Martín Martínez Páez is a doctoral student in Management Sciences, and holds a Master's in Education. He has worked on issues related to the internationalisation of the curriculum, the academic management, and the innovation and quality assurance in Higher Education. Fray has participated as speaker and poster presenter in international conferences in the area of internationalisation and academic quality in many countries. He has been awarded two Colombian fellowships for doctoral studies and internships in innovative pedagogical experiences. He is currently carrying out activities related to the internationalisation of the curriculum.

    Divinia Jithoo

    Durban University of Technology (South Africa)

    Divinia Jithoo is a Specialist in International Education at the International Education and Partnerships Office at the Durban University of Technology. She has gained extensive experience in higher education internationalisation, and has a keen interest in internationalisation of the curriculum and research. Ms. Jithoo has gained expertise in International Virtual Exchange, specifically in Collaborative Online International Learning as an approach to inclusivity in internationalisation. She also holds a PhD in Higher Education Studies from the University of Western Cape, and her research focuses on global structural dynamics of international academic collaborative research.

    Osvaldo Succi Jr.

    Centro Paula Souza/Cesu (Brazil)

    Osvaldo Succi Jr., Ph.D. serves as Virtual Exchange Coordinator for Centro Paula Souza (FATEC - Cesu) in Brazil and has been working with COIL projects for the past 10 years. He worked as a Human Resources Training Specialist and as a Business Management course designer. In 2014, his team received a Santander Bank Award as the Best Academic Partnership for a COIL-Virtual Exchange collaboration developed with SUNY Ulster. In 2022, Centro Paula Souza received the BRaVE (Brazilian Virtual Exchange) quality seal from the Brazilian Association for International Education (FAUBAI).

    Chirag Sheth

    Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera (Spain)

    Chirag Sheth is a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology and Public Health at CEU Cardenal Herrera University. He has championed institutional and academic
    internationalisation through building and implementing the global internationalisation
    strategy. He has also served as mobility coordinator, deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation. Currently, Sheth is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Virtual Exchange, and participates actively in the international virtual exchange and COIL community. He has spoken on this subject in training courses, conferences and workshops at national and international levels. He regularly collaborates with colleagues from 5 continents.
