In 1951, at the age of 63 and already enjoying worldwide acclaim, Swiss architect Le Corbusier designed and built “Cabanon” for himself on the French Riviera, putting his minimalist philosophy of living into practice within a compact space of just 15 m². Over the years, he spent his summers here immersed in thought and work, turning the cabin into a “modern thatched hut” — much like ancient Chinese scholars, who found repose for body and mind within the smallest of spaces, seeking ultimate spiritual freedom within the narrowest material boundaries.

Today, confronted by the climate crisis and ecological damage driven by consumerist ways of life, we ask: how can we reimagine this icon and chart a sustainable blueprint for human habitation?

“Cabanon 2050” offers one possible answer. It is guided by a vision of design for disassembly and circular construction, zero carbon across the entire life cycle, and complete energy self-sufficiency. The project reconfigures the dwelling into two core components: a highly compact “body of necessity” and a flexible, customizable, multifunctional “body of spiritual freedom.” By integrating photovoltaic, rainwater management, biological wastewater treatment, and intelligent control systems, it enables contemporary inhabitants, even within the smallest of spaces, to enter into a renewed dialogue with nature.
