While widely portrayed as a distant ecosystem under threat, the Amazon is, in fact, a space of constant innovation already generating global impact. This event, organized by Swissnex in Brazil in collaboration with the Frontiers Planet Prize as part of Climate Week in Zurich, brings these stories to the city, highlighting how researchers, traditional communities, companies, and institutions are working together to reshape our relationship with nature.
Through real-world case studies and first-hand experiences from practitioners in the region, the session reveals how collaborations across science, local communities, and the private sector are advancing sustainable bioeconomy approaches, biodiversity conservation, and climate solutions, helping shape a more balanced and resilient future.
Building on these perspectives, the event connects Amazonian realities with global scientific research. Using climate variability and extreme events such as megadroughts as a starting point, it introduces insights from Swiss research, including the work of Dirk Karger (WSL), whose research explores the links between macroecology, biodiversity, and climatology. By fostering a dialogue between local knowledge and global science, the session highlights the value of integrating diverse perspectives to better understand and address complex environmental challenges across regions and scales.

Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL
Dirk Nikolaus Karger
Senior Researcher at the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSLSenior researcher at the interface of macroecology, biodiversity research, and climatology. His research focuses on how climate and biodiversity are linked in time and space. A focus of his recent work has been the development of algorithms to downscale climate data to the biologically relevant scales needed for ecological studies. He is currently studying how extreme weather and extreme events, such as megadroughts, affect vegetation and biodiversity. He have also done extensive work on the geography and biodiversity of cloud forest ecosystems in the tropics and the biogeography of tropical islands.
