The NCCR DFAB

The NCCR DFAB undertakes research in advanced digital technologies and techniques towards radical a transformative shift for building solutions. Innovative construction research topics including AI supported design and engineering, new material development, 3D Printing and robotic assembly are at the forefront of this transformation, addressing the challenges of achieving relevant global UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In this talk Russell Loveridge will present DFAB research and innovations from Switzerland that demonstrates the potentials of these digital fabrication technologies towards the goal of radically improved sustainability in construction.

Following the presentation Professor Kazuki Hayashi from the Kyoto University will join the discussion. Together they will examine how of AI and computational structural design will play an intrinsic role in developing sustainable design and industrialized construction solutions for both Switzerland and Japan.

Bio

Dr. Russell Loveridge
Managing Director Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Digital Fabrication (DFAB)
Russell Loveridge is Managing Director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Digital Fabrication (DFAB). He studied civil engineering and architecture, completed his professional degree in Toronto, his MAS Diploma at the ETH Zurich, and his doctorate at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He has worked professionally in construction and architecture and has extensive academic experience. His research investigates advanced fabrication, smart materials, and novel construction techniques all to develop emerging technologies for sustainable design. Russell now coordinates the NCCR DFAB multi-disciplinary team of over 120 researchers, engineers and technicians, contributing to one of the most advanced research consortiums worldwide.

Dr. Kazuki Hayashi
Assistant Professor Kyoto University
Kazuki Hayashi is an assistant professor in the field of architectural design and structural engineering at Kyoto University. As a researcher and programmer at the intersection of architectural design and structural engineering. His research aims to revolutionize design and construction processes through novel computational methods including machine learning for structural design. His research has included stays at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) as a visiting researcher. He is also a 1st-Class Kenchikushi, an officially qualified Japanese architect and building engineer.
